Effective use of concrete resources in primary mathematics for all children

When used effectively, concrete resources have the power to support children’s understanding and to challenge children’s thinking and reasoning at a deeper level. This workshop will explore the progression through mathematical concepts from the initial introduction to a deeper level of understanding.
When teachers know how to introduce concepts effectively with concrete resources, children can build their understanding on secure foundations and tackle fluency questions with confidence. Concrete resources can then be used to further develop this secure understanding, allowing children to generalise, reason and problem solve at a deeper level.
