Why Welsh role models matter

How many of us can name a figure from the British civil rights movement? Most schools rely on role models from England or America, overlooking the powerful stories on our own doorstep. This seminar explores why Welsh role models matter for identity, belonging, and broadening pupils’ understanding of diversity. We examine the impact of seeing people from Wales – across disability, LGBTQ+, race, religion and more – represented in the curriculum, and the risks of relying on narratives from elsewhere. To support teachers who often struggle to find Welsh examples, we will introduce our new Welsh Role Models resource pack.
