The use of AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) and multimodal communication is widely acknowledged as essential for supporting children to communicate, however suggestions on how to do that in the classroom can be confusing and contradictory. In this workshop we will explore what the current understanding is of AAC and bust some myths that can restrict access to AAC by sharing community sourced information and current research. There will be a specific focus on supporting autistic children and on taking an expansive approach to supporting their communication, agency and autonomy.
