Why do intelligent, committed professionals sometimes miss safeguarding concerns that later seem obvious? This seminar explores the hidden cognitive biases that influence safeguarding judgement, including confirmation bias, groupthink, authority bias, availability bias and the halo effect. Using real-world examples from education and safeguarding practice, delegates will examine how these “submerged rocks” affect decision-making, reporting and professional curiosity. Attendees will gain practical strategies for challenging assumptions, improving team discussions and creating a culture where concerns are explored rigorously rather than explained away. The result is safer decision-making for children, young people and staff.
