Behaviour Is Communication: Understanding what distressed children are really telling us

What happens when behaviour isn’t defiance, but distress? Increasing numbers of children communicate anxiety, sensory overload and emotional overwhelm through refusal, shutdown, avoidance or dysregulation. This session explores behaviour through the lens of nervous system regulation, emotional safety and neurodiversity, helping delegates distinguish between compliance difficulties and genuine distress. Using practical examples from schools and families, Laura shares evidence-informed strategies that reduce conflict, strengthen relationships and create emotionally safe environments where pupils can engage, regulate and learn.
