Attendance Starts with Belonging: Practical strategies to reduce absence

Behind every absence is a pupil with their own experiences, needs and barriers. How can schools combine clear expectations and consistent routines with the relationships and support that help pupils attend?

In this practical seminar, Ian draws on his experience as a school leader and school improvement consultant to explore how attendance, belonging, behaviour and safeguarding connect. Using examples from school practice, he will consider how to identify emerging absence patterns, understand barriers through pupil and family conversations, and plan targeted support, including for pupils with additional learning needs.

Delegates will leave with practical approaches to strengthen daily attendance routines, build constructive partnerships with families, support pupils returning after absence and check whether interventions are making a difference.
