Working-class students start out at a disadvantage and the education system fails to close the gap. Working-class students get worse outcomes, are less likely to go to university, are less likely to find fulfilling and well-paid employment, and experience worse health and wellbeing. This not about ability or effort; it is an accident of birth. Meritocracy doesn’t exist.
